SETLUR GOPAL VASUDEV S.G.Vasudev was born on March, 3, 1941 in Mysore, Karnataka.

He completed his Diploma in Fine Arts, Government College of Arts and Craft, Madras in 1968. K.C.S.Paniker his teacher had a deep influence on him and he encouraged him to follow his impulse fully. He received recognition as a painter early in his life and he participated in several important group and solo exhibitions in India and abroad. Vasudev became popular with his Vriksha series which he did in the seventies that further elaborated into the Mithuna Series, through a series of drawings and copper relief works. Thereafter he explored many themes like Humanscapes, He & She series, Hayavadana and Ganesha. In his entire works one can see that seems often spill into one another and they reappear over and over again, like old refrains. He uses similar lyrical lines and brilliant colours.

Vasudev also worked closely with the master weavers to create tapestries in silk featuring the different themes he has been exploring over the years. Vasudev’s paintings teem with a multiplicity of images that are drawn from the extraordinary repertoire of ideas to which his artistic mind and heart has always been open. Over the years he has worked in several mediums at the same time. Vasudev has borrowed from and contributed to other media and art. In the seventies Vasudev served as an art Director for a number of “new wave” meaningful films. He also did a set of line drawings based on selected poems of A.K. Ramanujan, the renowned poet, linguist and folklorist who was also a close friend. As one of the founder members of the Cholamandal Artists’ Village, Vasudev explores the exciting challenge of working in different materials such as beaten metal objects and batik style paintings on cloth as well as his canvases.

In the early days, they were done in a heavy impasto. Later, however, Vasudev realized that he could integrate the linear impulse that is the most significant aspect of the South Indian style with both colour and lyricsm. Simple geometrical shapes provide a frame to the composition that has an intuitive presence. Vasudev has also been on the Executive Board of the Lalit Kala Akademi. Presently he works and lives in Bangaluru. SHORT PROFILE S.G.Vasudev was born in 1941 in Mysore, Karnataka.
