Chandra Bhattacharjee

Born 1960 in Thrissur, Kerala, After his studies in Philosophy, John opted for the age old tradition of Gurukul and had his initiations' in Art under Jyothi Sahi at Silvepura Bangalore. He has held his solo show at Cochin in 2005; Bangalore & Mainz and Saarbrucken, Germany in 1997 and Alliance Francaise, Bangalore in 1991. He has also had 3 two men shows, two in New Delhi in 2002 & 2003 and one in Bangalore in 2002. He has also participated in several group shows in India and Abroad.

He has been awarded at Arad International Biennale of Art, Romania in 2005; 'Honourable mention'- 10th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh in 2002 and 'Honorable Mention' - 42nd National Exhibition of Art by Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi in 2000. He has also been working on site/theme specific art events using installations, dance and photography focusing on social-cultural concerns. He lives and works in Bangalore.

The figures in my paintings are self-introspective, but in repose. One figure has his eyes closed and the other has his eyes open. They appear calm but that stillness shrouds an extraordinary inner turmoil, which comes from a desire to understand one's true self.

The world in which they live is symbolized by the clouds, I call them 'Designer Clouds'. Much like the manmade mushroom clouds, these designer clouds are emblematic of human beings' imposition on Nature. These images cast their shadow on the figures, suggesting the insidious power of artifice.
