BEGINNINGS

He was born in Behala, West Bengal. 1949 Curator, Govt. Museum, Nepal. 1951-52 Established Banasthali Vidyapith, a womens educational center, Rajasthan. 1952 Along with his wife Leela set up an Art Center to impart training to both artists and art teachers, Mussourie. 1956 After undergoing an eye operation he lost his eyesight. 1973 Biographical film, The Inner Eye, a film directed by Satyajit Ray. 1979 He wrote Chitrakar, a collection of writings in Bengali.

EDUCATION

1914 Studied at Brahmacharya Ashram, Santiniketan. 1919-24 Studied in Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. 1937-38 Went to Japan and learnt from the Japanese masters like Sesshu and Sotatsu. 1954-56 Appointed Educational Adviser, Art School of Patna, Govt. of Bihar. 1958 Taught Art Theory, Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. 1970 Professor, Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. Principal, Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan.

STYLE

Stylistically we can call him post - cubist. His painting combines schematic representation with conceptual complexity.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Taught art at Sisu Vibhaga, Santiniketan. 1925-49 Art Teacher at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. 1951-52 Taught at Banasthali Vidyapith, a womens educational center, Rajasthan. 1952 Started Art Training and taught at Childrens School, Musoorie, Uttaranchal. 1954 Appointed as Educational Advisor to Art School, Patna. 1958-70 Professor, Art Theory Faculty, Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan.
