BEGINNINGS

He was born in Srinagar, Kashmir. Worked as signboard painter, craftsman of papier-mch and weaver to make his living. 1952 Member of Progressive Artists Association, Bombay. Santosh was an acclaimed poet and writer of the Kashmiri language.

Self-Taught Craftsman, Painter, Weaver. 1947-53 Learnt Painting, Weaving, Papier-Mache. 1954-56 Govt. of India, Cultural Scholarship. Fine Arts Faculty, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda (Student of N.S. Bendre).

STYLE

The basic underpinning of the style, on which Santosh built his artistic expression, is the Kashmir Shaiva philosophy. The geometrically precised and symmetrical compositions are seemingly structured in the manner of classical Mandala`s or Yantra`s, yet they are not mere appropriation.
